about
Cover Band is an improvisational musical project between Benjamin Westfall and Van Jackson-Weaver which incorporates experimentalism grounded in popular song. For this project, Benjamin Westfall sang his vocals through electronic processing while Van Jackson-Weaver played the electric guitar, also processed. Together they reimagine pieces of popular music dating back over fifty years. The process of reimagining popular songs in an avant-garde style serves both to circumvent the conventions of popular music while also simultaneously giving popular context to the avant-garde that some listeners might not be familiar with.
Albert King was one of the great electric blues guitar players and here Cover Band tackles his biggest hit. This is the only time during these sessions in which a harmonica was introduced. While the cover is not exactly blues music it shows how far reaching the influence of blues music can be.
All performances were recorded live in Ben’s backyard using a Zoom H2n. Free of artifice, the simplicity of the recording method allows the listener to experience a realistic perspective on the improvisations which, in the source material, often came out in a more consumptive form.
